A private journey shaped around the whole of Croatia There is a version of this trip that most travellers take. Shared buses between cities. Group tours at every major sight. Hotels chosen by someone else's spreadsheet. Dinners at 6pm because the group needs to move. It covers the same geography. It does not cover the same ground. This is the private version. Your driver guide meets you in Zagreb on day one and stays with you for eleven days through the baroque streets of the capital, across Istria's inland hills that smell of truffles and sea salt, along a coast where Roman emperors built their retirement palaces, by ferry to an island where lavender grows on limestone above the Adriatic, and all the way south until Dubrovnik's walls rise out of the sea exactly as they always should. The vehicle is yours alone. The departure time each morning is yours to set. The stops along the way are yours to choose. And the person sitting in the front seat knows the difference between a restaurant that serves tourists and one that serves locals — and will take you to the second one every time. Ten days is the right amount of time for this route. Long enough to move at a human pace. Short enough that every day still feels like it matters.

Day 1 — Zagreb: The City That Always Surprises Zagreb is not what most people expect from Croatia. No Adriatic drama, no walled old town above turquoise water — instead, a confident Central European capital with a baroque upper town, a cathedral, open-air markets, and a café culture that takes its coffee seriously. Arrive, settle in, and walk the city at your own pace. The Dolac market in the morning, the funicular to Gornji Grad, a table somewhere on Tkalčićeva as the evening comes in. It is a good introduction to everything that follows. Overnight: Zagreb Day 2 Zagreb to Rovinj: Venice Without the Crowds The drive west to Istria takes under three hours, and the first look at the sea from the road above Rovinj is the moment the trip shifts. Rovinj sits on a peninsula that juts into the Adriatic like a small Italian city that ended up in Croatia and decided to stay. Narrow streets that climb toward the hilltop church of St Euphemia. Fishing boats at anchor below terraced restaurants. The old town is compact enough to know well by the end of a single afternoon and beautiful enough that you will want to stay longer. The evening belongs to the waterfront. Overnight: Rovinj Day 3 — Istrian Countryside, Truffles, a Local Winery and Pula The morning is not for the coast. The morning is for the interior. Istrian inland is one of the most interesting gastronomic corners of Europe, and most travellers drive past it on the motorway. You will not. A visit to a truffle family — forest, trained dog, the hunt, and then a white or black truffle in your hand that smells like nothing you have encountered before. Then a local winery: Malvasia poured in a stone cellar, local prosciutto that has been curing in the draught for exactly as long as it needs to, a table in the shade. The afternoon belongs to Pula. A Roman amphitheatre that stands not as a ruin but as a building twenty centuries after construction began, intact enough that it still hosts concerts on summer evenings. Pass through the Arch of the Sergii and the Gate of Hercules, and end the day with grilled fish above the harbour. Overnight: Pula or Rovinj Day 4 Pula to Plitvice Lakes: The Drive That Changes Everything The drive from the coast back into the interior, across the Lika plateau, to the edge of Croatia's most visited national park. Arriving the evening before is not optional it is the difference between Plitvice and a crowd. The park is at its finest early in the morning, before the day tours arrive by the coachload, and being there the night before is the only way to guarantee it. Overnight: Plitvice Lakes area Day 5 — Plitvice Lakes to Zadar: Sixteen Lakes, Endless Waterfalls Sixteen terraced lakes connected by waterfalls, wooden walkways and dense forest. The colour of the water emerald green to chalky blue changes depending on the angle, the season and the light. No photograph explains it adequately. The lower lakes take two hours to walk. Adding the upper lakes takes four to five. Start early, stay as long as you want, and drive to Zadar in the afternoon with the park still fresh. Overnight: Zadar Day 6 — Zadar: The First Real Adriatic City Two hours from the national park to the sea. Zadar is one of Croatia's oldest cities — a Roman forum still open to the sky, a medieval old town on a narrow peninsula, and a waterfront where the Sea Organ plays continuously with the movement of the waves. Arrive in the afternoon. Stay for the sunset. Hitchcock called it the most beautiful in the world, and he had good reasons. The Church of St Donatus. The Greeting to the Sun — a circular installation of 300 solar panels that pulses with light after dark. Dinner on the riva, fish straight from the Adriatic. Overnight: Zadar Day 7 — Zadar to Split via Šibenik and Primošten Šibenik first — a medieval Croatian city with a UNESCO cathedral built entirely from interlocking cut stone, no brick, no mortar, just shaped limestone holding itself together by geometry and craftsmanship. The fortress of St Michael above the channel gives a view worth the climb. An hour here is well spent. Primošten next a small old town on what was once an island, surrounded by vineyards growing Babić, one of Croatia's oldest red grape varieties. The streets narrow toward a church at the top. The sea is visible on three sides. Then onward to Split. Overnight: Split Day 8 Split, Trogir, Klis and Salona Split is unique in a way that is difficult to describe without sounding like a brochure. Diocletian's Palace — a 1,700-year-old Roman imperial residence — is not a museum. Real people live, work and eat lunch inside walls that are seventeen centuries old. The Peristyle is the palace's central courtyard, and one of the most persuasive pieces of evidence that great architecture does not age. Trogir is 30 minutes west a Venetian island town with its own UNESCO listing and a grid of streets unchanged since the 13th century. Klis Fortress controlled the mountain pass above Split for two thousand years and is visible from the city below. Salona was the Roman capital of Dalmatia, open to the sky and still readable in stone. Overnight: Split Day 9 Split: Free Day Hvar by Ferry A deliberately open day. Hvar by ferry from Split ninety minutes to a Renaissance harbour town, lavender fields on the inland hills, and the best terrace views in Dalmatia from the fortress above the harbour. Hvar is both quiet and lively depending on which part you look for, and both exist within twenty minutes of each other on foot. Alternative: a private boat tour around the Blue Cave, the Green Cave and the Pakleni islands. Both options are arranged separately and paid directly based on your preference and budget. Your driver guide handles all the logistics. Overnight: Split Day 10 Split to Dubrovnik via Ston and Pelješac Winery The final drive south. Ston first — a small town with the longest preserved fortification walls in Europe after the Great Wall of China. Mali Ston and its oyster beds have been operating since the 14th century with documented continuity. Oysters pulled straight from the bay are not a stop to skip. Pelješac next: a family winery on steep slopes above the Adriatic where Plavac Mali grows on terrain that is not horizontal at any point. Two or three wines, local cheese and olive oil, sea views. Wine tasting is an optional add-on, paid directly at the winery. Dubrovnik arrives in the late afternoon. The walls rise above the water exactly as they always should. Overnight: Dubrovnik Day 11 — Dubrovnik: Departure Your driver meets you at the hotel at the agreed time for transfer to Dubrovnik Airport or cruise port. Arrival and departure transfers are included in the tour price. Optional — if you are staying an extra day: walk the city walls in the morning (two hours, views over the rooftops and the open sea), the Stradun through the old town, Lokrum island by ferry in the afternoon, the cable car to Mount Srđ for the view that explains everything.
