Day 1 Zagreb: The City That Always Surprises First-Time Visitors Zagreb is not what most people expect. The Croatian capital has none of the Adriatic drama that dominates most images of the country no walled old towns above turquoise water, no island silhouettes on the horizon. What it has instead is a Central European city with a genuinely distinct character: a walkable upper town with baroque churches and a cathedral, a lower town of Austro-Hungarian boulevards and market squares, and a café culture that takes its coffee seriously. The day is yours. Walk the Dolac market in the morning, take the funicular up to Gornji Grad, stand in front of the cathedral, and find a table on Tkalčićeva street in the afternoon. Your driver-guide is available for recommendations, context, and anything that needs arranging but Zagreb on the first day is best approached slowly, without an agenda. Overnight: Zagreb Day 2 — Zagreb to Ljubljana: Two Capitals, One Afternoon The drive from Zagreb to Ljubljana takes approximately 2 hours short enough to feel effortless, long enough to cross from Croatia into Slovenia and feel the landscape quietly shift. Ljubljana is compact, walkable, and built around a river that runs through the centre of the old town beneath a castle on a hill. The afternoon gives you enough time to cross the Triple Bridge, walk the Plečnik-designed market arcade along the riverbank, take the funicular or walk up to the castle, and find a table at one of the riverside restaurants as the evening light comes in. Ljubljana is one of those cities that people consistently underestimate before arriving and consistently talk about after leaving. The afternoon is enough to understand why. Overnight: Ljubljana Day 3 — Ljubljana, Bled & Postojna: Slovenia's Greatest Hits in One Day This is the day that Slovenia shows everything it has and it has a great deal for a small country. Lake Bled comes first. The lake sits in a glacial basin beneath the Julian Alps, with a 17th-century church on a small island at its centre and a medieval castle on the cliff above the eastern shore. The combination of the water, the island, the castle, and the mountains behind it is so photogenic it looks almost staged. It is not. Walk the path around the lake, take a traditional wooden pletna boat to the island church, or simply stand at the shore and accept that some places genuinely look like the photographs. Postojna Cave comes in the afternoon. The cave system extends for over 24 kilometres beneath the Karst plateau and is one of the largest in Europe. A narrow gauge train carries visitors into the mountain before the walking section begins — past stalactites, stalagmites, and rock formations that have been growing for millions of years. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 10 degrees regardless of the season outside. Bring a layer. Overnight: Ljubljana Day 4 Ljubljana to Plitvice Lakes: Crossing Into Croatia The drive from Ljubljana to Plitvice Lakes takes approximately 2.5 hours and crosses back into Croatia through the Lika region a landscape of dense forest, limestone hills, and a quietness that feels like a deliberate contrast to everything that comes before and after it. Arriving at Plitvice in the afternoon gives you options. A short walk to the lower lakes before closing time. A quiet evening in one of the guesthouses near the park entrance. Or simply the satisfaction of being in the right place the evening before a long day in the park because Plitvice is best experienced in the morning, before the day tours arrive, and being there the night before is the only way to guarantee that. Overnight: Plitvice Lakes area Day 5 Plitvice Lakes: Croatia's Most Spectacular National Park Sixteen terraced lakes connected by waterfalls, all set within dense beech and fir forest. The water moves from one lake to the next through natural travertine barriers that shift and grow over centuries, turning the landscape into something that looks improbable from every angle and remains improbable even after hours of walking through it. The lower lakes take approximately 2 hours to walk. Adding the upper lakes extends that to 4 to 5 hours. The morning light on the water is the best reason to start early. Overnight: Zadar Day 6 Plitvice Lakes to Zadar: The First Adriatic City The drive from Plitvice to Zadar takes approximately 2 hours and ends at the sea which, after five days of capitals, lakes, caves, and forest, feels like an arrival in the truest sense of the word. Zadar is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Croatia. The old town sits on a narrow peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, with a Roman forum still open to the sky in the centre and a medieval street plan that has barely changed since the Venetians left. The Sea Organ on the Riva waterfront uses wave energy to produce sound through stone pipes beneath the promenade. The Sun Salutation lights up at dusk. Alfred Hitchcock said the sunset here was the most beautiful in the world. Arrive in the afternoon and decide for yourself. Overnight: Zadar Day 7 Zadar to Split via Šibenik and Primošten: The Coast at Its Most Rewarding The drive south from Zadar to Split follows the coast through two stops that reward travellers who take the time to leave the main road. Šibenik comes first a medieval Croatian city built on a hillside above the channel, with a UNESCO cathedral constructed entirely from interlocking cut stone and a hilltop fortress with views across the archipelago. It is consistently the most underrated city on the Dalmatian coast and consistently the stop that travellers are most glad they made. Primošten comes next a small town built on what was once an island, now connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The old town sits on a hill above the water, surrounded by vineyards on the slopes below that produce Babić, one of Croatia's oldest indigenous red grape varieties. It is a short stop — 45 minutes is enough to walk the old town and understand why painters and photographers have been coming here for decades. Overnight: Split Day 8 Split: Diocletian's Palace, Trogir, Klis & Salona Split is built inside a Roman emperor's retirement palace — literally inside it, with medieval apartments, restaurants, bars, and a cathedral occupying the rooms, corridors, and cellars that Diocletian built for himself in the 4th century. The palace is not a museum. People live there. Washing hangs between columns that are seventeen centuries old. That fact alone makes Split unlike any other city in Croatia. The day extends beyond the city. Trogir is 30 minutes west along the coast a small island town with a Venetian old town that earned its own UNESCO listing, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. Klis Fortress sits above Split on a ridge that controlled the only pass through the mountains behind the coast for two thousand years — most recently as a filming location for Game of Thrones. Salona, the ancient Roman capital of Dalmatia, lies just inland an open air archaeological site where the scale of what was once here is still visible in the stone. Overnight: Split Day 9 — Split: Hvar or Boat Tour — A Day on the Water The ninth day is deliberately open. Split sits at the centre of one of the most beautiful island groups in the Mediterranean, and at least one day should be spent on the water rather than moving between cities. Hvar is the most popular choice a 2-hour ferry from Split to an island of lavender fields, Renaissance architecture, and a harbour town that has been a point of arrival for travellers since the Venetians built the loggia on the main square. The old town is compact enough to walk in an hour and relaxed enough to spend the whole day in without feeling like you have missed anything. Alternatively, a private boat tour around the Blue Cave on Biševo, the Green Cave, and the five islands of the Pakleni archipelago gives you the Adriatic from the water which is the only angle from which it makes complete sense. Overnight: Split Day 10 — Split to Dubrovnik via Ston and a Pelješac Winery: The Final Drive South The last transfer of the tour is also one of the best. The drive from Split to Dubrovnik takes approximately 3 hours on the direct route — but the direct route misses two of the most rewarding stops between the two cities. Ston sits at the base of the Pelješac peninsula, behind Europe's longest preserved city walls. At the harbour, oysters farmed directly in Mali Ston bay are served straight from the water. They are among the finest in the Mediterranean. A glass of local white alongside them is the natural conclusion to the stop. The winery comes next a small family-owned estate on the Pelješac peninsula, where Plavac Mali grows on steep south-facing slopes above the Adriatic. Two or three wines, local cheese and olive oil, vineyard views over the open sea. Wine tasting is arranged as an optional add-on and is not included in the base tour price. Dubrovnik arrives in the late afternoon the walls appearing above the water as the road descends toward the coast, exactly as they should for a city that has been ending journeys for a thousand years. Overnight: Dubrovnik Day 11 — Dubrovnik: The Walls, the Old Town, and the Adriatic From Above The final day belongs entirely to Dubrovnik. Walk the city walls in the morning the full circuit takes approximately 2 hours and offers views over the old town rooftops, the harbour, and the islands that no street-level photograph can replicate. Inside the walls, the Stradun is the main limestone paved thoroughfare that connects the two city gates, lined with baroque palaces, churches, and the kind of coffee shops that have learned to coexist with the crowds without losing their character entirely. The Lokrum island ferry runs from the old port every 30 minutes and offers a quiet afternoon alternative to the old town a small forested island with a botanical garden, a Benedictine monastery, and a saltwater lake connected to the sea. Cable car to Mount Srđ above the city gives you the view that makes clear why Dubrovnik was worth defending for so long.
